Luceplan - History & Milestones

Founded in Milan in 1978 by the three young architects Riccardo Sarfatti, Sandra Severi and Paolo Rizzatto, Luceplan is now one of the best-known designer lighting manufacturers in the world. Since May 2000, the company with Italian roots has been part of Philips Lighting's home lighting division.

The history of Luceplan began as a small design company for sophisticated lighting technology in Milan. Fortunately, Riccardo Sarfatti was able to draw on the experience of his father Gino Sarfatti, the founder of Arteluce and a pioneer in the field of modern Italian lighting.

When Alberto Meda joined the founding team just three years after Luceplan was founded, the brand's innovative focus was further strengthened. As a passionate experimenter and with a background as an engineer specializing in plastics, he brought new aspects to product development. Together with Paolo Rizzatto, Alberto Meda created some of the company's most important luminaires.

Year after year, Luceplan has been able to attract further talented designers from all over the world who have contributed to the creation of Luceplan's unmistakable character.

Luceplan - Orientation of the brand

The unique designer luminaires from Luceplan combine beauty and perfection with the highest performance standards. The functional idea is always at the heart of the lights. Flexible use - combinable and customizable - is particularly important to the Milan-based company. Three factors are always incorporated into all creations: experience, research and innovation. The synthesis of these factors gives rise to Luceplan's signature industrial design. Over the years, Luceplan has been able to expand its status as a leading developer of Italian design lighting. The company has made many statements by establishing branches and flagship stores in international design hotspots. Luceplan sells its products at over 1,800 points of sale worldwide. Almost 80 percent of the lights are exported.

Blow

Luceplan luminaires are modern, slim and aesthetic. They bring the effect of the light to the fore, but are not so simple that they are lost in their surroundings. On the contrary, they set fascinating accents even when they are not switched on.

The Luceplan product portfolio includes indoor and outdoor luminaires. The offer does not only extend to the private sector. The luminaires are also popular for public spaces. Many of Luceplan's design classics can be found in museums, churches, architecture studios and schools. The company also has functional solutions for commercial spaces - especially for shopping centers, stores and showrooms and, of course, for restaurants.

The products are also popular for lighting offices, conference rooms and hotels. In addition to luminaires that only emit light, Luceplan's portfolio also includes Blow, an illuminated ceiling fan with transparent blades.

Luceplan - Cooperations

uceplan has been part of the home lighting division of Philips Lighting since 2010. The result is a valuable symbiosis of state-of-the-art lighting technology research and Italian design artistry. The luminaires from Luceplan can be fitted very well with the high-quality products from Philips Lighting. WarmGlow lamps or the modern Philips Hue system can be combined with Luceplan luminaires. Philips' outstanding developments in the LED sector harmonize perfectly with Luceplan's modern luminaire designs. Luminaires such as Costanzina with translucent shades particularly benefit from the play of colors offered by Philips Hue. Individual lighting moods can be created from 16 million colors.

Luceplan has entered into a further cooperation with emdedesign, the studio of Frankfurt artist Thomas Em¬de. Under the name "created by emdedesign for Luceplan", Luceplan presented an OLED luminaire for the first time at the Light+Building trade fair in 2014.

Prizes and awards

Luceplan has received many international design awards in recent decades, including the most important Italian industrial design prize Compasso d'Oro ADI seven times - for the first time in 1981 for the D7 wall and ceiling light by Paolo Rizzatto and Sandro Colbertaldo. Luceplan has also received the GoodDesign Chicago and Design Plus Frankfurt design awards as well as the Red Dot Design Award and the European Community Design Prize - most of them several times. In addition, the Costanzina, On off and Mix lights have been on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 2010.

The Luceplan product portfolio includes a variety of high-quality designer lights for indoor and outdoor use. The focus is on unusual yet functional design approaches as well as high-quality workmanship. The Costanza, Hope and Berenice luminaire series are considered true classics from Luceplan.

Costanza

The Costanza living room lamp - available as a floor, table, ceiling, wall and pendant lamp - is one of Luceplan's best-known classics and is regarded as the company's first great success. Created in 1986 by designer Paolo Rizzatto, the focus here is on light, underlined by a light, simple yet austere design. The glare-free, translucent lampshade made of wafer-thin polycarbonate provides pleasant light. Originally in white, Costanza is now also available in soft, picturesque pastel shades (Mezzo Tono collection) and in strong, dynamic colors (Radieuse collection). The rod on the lampshade is a striking detail that characterizes the lamp. Different light intensities can be selected here. The large Costanza collection, which manages to be both new and classic at the same time, includes numerous variants in different sizes for every application.

In 2006, Costanza got a big sister called Grande Costanza - a true Luceplan classic in maxi format. It is available with a switch or with a sensor rod for dimming. The Grande Costanza Open Air is specially designed for outdoor use. The outdoor version of the Costanza provides efficient and elegant light for patios and gardens.

In 2008, the curved floor lamp Lady Costanza was added to the luminaire family. The luminaire is elegantly flexible thanks to its adjustable telescopic stand and the option to rotate through 360°. The height and spatial orientation of the Lady Costanza can be adjusted to suit your personal taste and requirements.

Finally, the Costanza LED will be launched on the market in 2014. The Costanza owes its high lighting performance to LED technology. The LED module with aluminium heat sink harmonizes perfectly with the classic polycarbonate lampshade. Thanks to the dimming function, the luminaire is equally suitable for intensive and atmospheric lighting.

Hope

Hope

Hope was created in 2009 by Francisco Gomez Paz and Paolo Rizzatto. One year later, it was awarded the GoodDesign Chicago design prize and the Red Dot Design Award. This was followed in 2011 by the Compasso d'Oro ADI for Hope. The fascination that emanates from the Hope lamp family is based on the elimination of material heaviness and thus a special lightness. It is available as a floor, wall, ceiling and pendant light. Hope is modular, combinable, versatile and elegant. The flat Frensell lenses made of polycarbonate look like fine petals and have extraordinary reflective and refractive properties. This enhances the fascinating effect of the light and reduces energy consumption at the same time.

Berenice

Berenice

The delicate, elegant Berenice desk lamp was designed by Alberto Meda and Paolo Rizzatto in 1985. Probably its most famous illuminated site is the office of the New York Times. The filigree reading light is extremely stable and flexible - it can be individually adjusted with soft, flowing yet precise movements. The lamp head can be rotated through 360° so that the light beam can be directed as desired. The reflector is made of aluminum or pressed glass and emits light that is ideal for reading and working. Depending on the space available, Berenice can also be mounted on the wall. The luminaire is available with high-performance light-emitting diodes that produce an exceptional amount of light with low energy consumption.
