To make full use of the operating possibilities of lamps and luminaires or to put them into operation safely and properly, you need various accessories. These accessories range from transformers, dimmers and motion detectors to extension cables and ceiling fixtures.
Accessories in the form of transformers are required when purchasing a luminaire that is operated with low voltage. A transformer converts the mains voltage of 230V into extra-low voltage of 6, 12 or 24V. Two different types of transformer are used to operate lights: the K transformer (conventional, magnetic) and the E transformer (electronic). The latter is more compact and lighter, which is particularly advantageous for installation in ceilings and walls.
Ballasts are required for the operation of fluorescent lamps, energy-saving lamps and discharge lamps of all types. They are responsible for igniting the lamp and regulating the lamp current. Of the three original ballasts (KVG, VVG, EVG), the electronic ballast (EVG) is almost the only one still in use today.
Dimmers are particularly useful for atmospheric living room design. They can be used to individually control the brightness in each room and thus create a room atmosphere that is adapted to the respective mood. Dimmers are available for almost all types of lights, but when choosing a light source, it is important to ensure that it is also dimmable.
Motion detectors are another useful accessory for lamps and lights. Known from outside as practical helpers in the garage driveway, at the front door or on the patio, they are also becoming increasingly popular inside the home. Stairways or long, dark corridors are illuminated more safely and practically in an energy-saving way thanks to motion detectors.
