Replacement Bulbs for Christmas Lights

The whole family, especially the children, look forward to decorating the Christmas tree, but here comes the disillusionment: The beloved set of Christmas lights won’t light up! There’re different ways Christmas lights can break, but often it’s due to non-functional bulbs. Fortunately, it’s not hard to replace the bulbs on a string of Christmas lights, you just have to keep a few things in mind.

How do I find the right replacement bulbs for my Christmas lights?

There are two options:

  • Replacement bulbs with a screw base, such as E10 bulbs.

  • Replacement bulbs with a push-in socket. For these bulbs, it’s extremely important that the voltage (in volts) and the power consumption (in watts) match exactly. For example, a bulb which has a power consumption of 0.84 W and a voltage of 7 V, cannot be replaced by a bulb with a power consumption of 0.8 W and a voltage of 7 V.

In any case, always make sure that the Christmas lights are unplugged before you start replacing the bulbs.

Can I replace the bulbs on all sets of Christmas lights?

There is one exception: if you have Christmas lights with built-in LEDs, you won’t be able to replace the light source. However, no need to worry - LEDs have a long service life and will work for many years, even decades.
