Downlights are often found in public buildings, offices and retail spaces, galleries, museums, bars and restaurants. Downlights are the absolute favorites for illuminating goods and sales areas in particular. A downlight is a ceiling light that is mainly round, but also rectangular or square in shape and can either be built into the ceiling or attached directly to the ceiling. If the downlights are intended for ceiling surface-mounting, they are called surface-mounted or surface-mounted downlights; downlights intended for recessed ceiling installation are called recessed downlights. These are installed in cavities or suspended ceilings.
Downlights are usually equipped with reflectors or other optical elements to shield the light source and create diffuse light distribution. This guarantees glare-free light. The light distribution of the downlights can be symmetrical, asymmetrical or narrow-beam. However, downlights usually have wide beam light distribution. Downlights are also available as gimbal-mounted spotlights, which means that the light heads of the downlights can be rotated in all directions. This variant is particularly advantageous in the store area, where the lighting accentuation is constantly changing - depending on the goods or exhibits. As far as light sources are concerned, compact fluorescent lamps are the most common light sources for downlights, but versions for low-voltage and high-voltage halogen lamps or metal halide lamps are also commercially available. Of course, there are also downlights that are operated with energy-saving LEDs.
Recessed downlights in particular, which disappear almost completely into the ceiling and can only make a name for themselves through the light they emit, are a rather inconspicuous detail in the interior design of a store or gallery. However, the effect of these downlights is enormous: they present goods, sales areas and art objects individually and effectively in the right light. A downlight is a versatile tool for functional and accent lighting. Do you still have questions about downlights? Here you can access our contact form.
