It's actually quite simple: because you simply need more light for your desk work than your ceiling light can provide.
Your brain is running at full speed with the various tasks at your desk. But not only this, but also your eyes and in order not to let them down, you need good task lighting in addition to general lighting - a desk lamp.
This provides you with pinpoint, glare-free light to help you with the various tasks and activities at your desk, the so-called. visual tasks, texts, images and objects simply become more visible. The eyes are relieved and they do not tire so quickly, discomfort or even headaches are prevented.
First of all: general lighting (e.g. ceiling lights) and task lighting (desk lamps) complement each other. So don't rely on just one of the two for your desk work. Otherwise you will not have enough light available or there will be too much light/dark contrast.
Furthermore ...
Counter question: Are you left-handed or right-handed? Strange question, you may be thinking. But it is important when answering the question. Because if you are right-handed, you should place your lamp left-handed on your desk. If you are left-handed, then just use the right side.
This way you avoid throwing yourself shadow on notes and the like with your hand. If you also have a PC on the table, the light should of course not be in front of the screen - that goes without saying. In other words: place the desk lamp to the left or right of the screen or behind it. However, always turn the lamp head away from you so that you are not dazzled.
Whether the light source of your desk lamp is replaceable depends on the model.
If the light sources are not replaceable, it is a model with fixed LED lamps which utilize the numerous technical advantages as well as the compactness of LED technology. This is because permanently installed LEDs allow very filigree designs.
For luminaires with permanently installed LEDs, you will find the note "The LED lamps cannot be replaced in the luminaire" on the energy label.
If the lamps can be replaced, you will also find the note "This luminaire is suitable for energy classes:" on the energy label. You will also find information on the socket, e.g. E27 or E14\, in the item details. You can then decide whether you actually want to screw in a halogen bulb or rather an LED bulb. Because every luminaire with a standardized socket such as E14 or E27 also fits a corresponding LED lamp.
If it is not an LED desk lamp with permanently installed LEDs, the choice is of course entirely up to you. But let's be honest: are you really still thinking about whether to choose LED or halogen? Whether you work with LED ...
Or what do you think?
Even a less bright desk lamp with around 200 lumens is better than none at all. However, **400-500 lumens are recommended for long and efficient work. ** Still too dark? Or is it already too bright? Then you should choose a luminaire with dimmer. This allows you to conveniently adjust the brightness (you can find out whether the light has a dimmer in the item details).
Also remember that you should have good general lighting in addition to desk lighting. This avoids too strong light-dark contrasts. Otherwise you'll get tired even quicker than you already are from the boring paperwork.
When choosing the light color of a desk lamp, it is advisable to opt for a clear, bright light, i.e. a universal white light. This corresponds to around 3,300 to 5,300 Kelvin and has a somewhat more sober and objective effect on us.
However, if this light is still not sober enough for you, you can use daylight white light (over 5,300 Kelvin). Or you may decide to leave the paperwork behind and prefer to relax in warm white light (under 3,300 Kelvin). All this is possible with one single desk lamp where you can set the light color individually, for example our table lamps from Philips Hue.
Having enough light on your desk is all well and good. But having a few extras can't hurt? No problem. You can choose from numerous extras for the desk lamps. You can find out whether the light you have selected offers the desired extras in the item details.
