While parents (and children) can choose freely between cute animals, colorful cars and exciting space scenes when it comes to design, a few cautions are recommended for lights in the children's room.
Always use break-proof plastic light sources to prevent glass and metal parts from being swallowed by children. Likewise, no energy-saving light bulbs belong in children's rooms, as they contain mercury, which can escape if they accidentally break.
The same applies to the quality of light in children's rooms: the light should be cozy. To do this, choose light sources with a warm white color temperature of around 2,700 Kelvin. Children also love colors! For example, they like to dress up or paint. To reproduce colors optimally, the light sources should have a color rendering index of at least Ra 80.
The ideal light source for children's rooms are LED lamps. This is not only energy-efficient, which is important when leaving the lights on, for example, but it is also switch-proof, so that frequent switching on and off is not a problem.
This depends on the intended use of the wall light in the children's room and its design. If it is used, for example, to improve the general lighting in a room or to direct spot-like light onto an area, a light source from 400 lumens or more is recommended. If the wall light is mainly decorative, a light source with fewer lumens is sufficient.
Since it is not possible to make a general statement about the required brightness, as the light emission, lampshades, room size or wall color, for example, influence the lighting effect, it should be borne in mind that a 40 watt incandescent lamp had about 400 lumens and a 60 watt incandescent lamp about 800 lumens. With modern LED light sources, therefore, it is important to pay attention to the lumen specification.
If there are no fixed power connections on the walls, we recommend children's room wall lights with plugs. These can be easily switched on and off using a switch on the housing or a cord switch.
All that is required is a socket outlet and wall mounting. With these lights, it is particularly important to check the socket and supply cable regularly.
While in the living room, for example, installation slightly above eye level, i.e. at a height of around 1.70 to 1.80 m, is recommended, the main concern in the children's room is to ensure that the light from the lamp cannot dazzle from any position, whether sitting, lying or standing.
However, many products have a lampshade that significantly reduces or prevents glare from the light source, so that the mounting height can be freely selected.
Night lights for the socket are a good addition to the lighting in the children's room, as lights that are switched on can have a negative effect on the sleep-wake rhythm. Night lights, on the other hand, provide orientation and a feeling of security.
