One wanted: a great color reproduction. Not to say: one hundred percent color reproduction. And you wanted: excellent brightness. But please make the light source as small as possible. What options did you have in the past? Definitely not as many as today! But there was one option: the G9 lamp. To be more precise: the G9 halogen lamp. It fulfilled exactly these requirements.
And suddenly you had the opportunity to bring lights with slimmer designs into your home. They had the small G9 pin base lamps and no longer needed to rely solely on the bulky incandescent bulbs.
That's how it used to be. And today? There you have LED! Fortunately! And of course also as a light source with a G9 base: the G9 LED lamp. Even today, this socket is still often used in new lights. Not to mention the much-loved lights with G9 sockets that do their job in our four walls. Of course, they also want to be equipped with modern technology - and they can be. No problem!
G9 generally refers to a high-voltage lamp without reflector. This means that the light is undirectional and radiates virtually all the way around. Perfect for the most beautiful feel-good light - especially with a warm white light color. Of course, it may not be the light source that directs the light in one direction, but the shape of the lampshade. So you should pay attention here!
But if you heard G9 in the past, you inevitably thought of halogen lamps. It was the halogen lamp star when it came to light in small bulb form. Today, of course, G9 no longer automatically stands for a halogen lamp. Just like E27, E14, GU10 etc., G9 is basically "just" a type of lamp base. And with a distance of - well, guess what, yes, exactly - 9 mm between the so-called. pins (hence the pin base lamp!). It also includes the condition that no reflector is installed there. However, it is not possible to tell from the G9 designation which lighting technology is ultimately hidden in the lamp. This can be very different. Halogen or also energy-saving lamps or even LED. As a so-called G9 LED lamp.
And just as the built-in lighting technology can differ, the actual length of the individual products can also vary. Also for LEDs with G9. Some are a few millimeters longer, others a little shorter. But all G9 lamps are small - at least compared to "normal" incandescent, halogen or LED lamps in bulb form. However, if every millimeter counts in your new or old luminaire, you can easily find the dimensions of the individual light source in the product details.
Of course, you can also insert them individually into a luminaire - the G9 LED. For example in a wall light or in a single ceiling spotlight. Also very nice. But: much more often - and much more preferably - the G9 lamp appears together in a group. For example with a multi-flame ceiling spotlight. Several pin base lamps provide perfect room lighting, usually with 200 - 400 lumens per bulb.
Both halogen and LED cover this brightness perfectly. The really clear difference, however: LEDs need fewer watts than a halogen lamp to achieve exactly the same brightness. Significantly less! That means: Electricity is saved, the environment and your wallet are less burdened. You want an example? Of course! For example, an LED light source with 3-4 watts can easily produce the same brightness as a halogen light source with 33 watts. The winner is clear. And that's you - your wallet and the environment. So if G9 then please use LED!
Our tip: Are you looking for information on brightness? Then simply look at the product details in the store under "Total lamp luminous flux".
Of course, you can also rely on the big brands Osram and Philips for the modern LED version of the former halogen stars. How exactly do you find such a G9 LED from the two manufacturers, you ask? Oh, it's really easy. Simply select the Filter Manufacturer in the G9 LED lamps category, click on Osram and/or Philips and you will be shown exactly the right pin base lamps.
Of course, the small light bulb stars are still available today in dimmable versions. In contrast to the earlier G9 stars with halogen technology - which could all be dimmed - today's LED light sources with G9 are somewhat more special. This means that they cannot all be dimmed. It varies from LED lamp to LED lamp. But don't panic! You can easily find out whether an LED with a G9 base can be dimmed or not. By looking in the product details of the relevant product to see whether it says "dimmable - yes". If it doesn't say so and you absolutely want a dimmable lamp - well, then unfortunately you'll have to choose a different product.
