Recessed floor lights for outdoors - Or the question: What's shining?

She doesn't like being in the limelight, that much is certain. Discreet restraint and harmonious integration into a larger whole, on the other hand, is her thing. But even if she likes to hold herself back, she likes to let others shine all the more and shine bigger - in her light. What may sound like the description of a great, well-known personality has in fact taken a small luminaire as its model, which itself stands back discreetly and yet can create great lighting effects. We are talking about: the floor recessed light for your garden!

How are recessed floor lights installed?

You should definitely consult your trusted electrician** here - it will save you a lot of work and nerves. Because today here, tomorrow there and the day after tomorrow somewhere completely different - if you want this in terms of lighting, you should rely on light to go or at least on practical solar lights with ground spike. But for recessed floor luminaires? They really are many things - but not exactly known for their local flexibility. Here you should be sure that the lights really should stay in place for longer - after all, they form a very close and not so easily detachable connection with the substrate.

This can be very versatile, especially outdoors. They are often found in (wooden) terraces, in paving, in beds, gravel or even in lawns. But regardless of the surface: each of the lights must be installed professionally. There are walk-on (tread-proof) and drive-on (roll-over) versions. These are to be used in a targeted manner depending on the application.

Are there recessed floor lights with LEDs?

LED lighting technology is celebrating its triumph inside and out. And rightly so! And recessed floor lights are of course no exception. In principle, however, you can still choose between recessed floor lights with halogen and LED. In the case of halogen, it is usually GU10 bulbs that you need to add to the shopping cart. But seriously, are you really still thinking about it? Are you relying on outdated technology? Or rather modern, easy on the wallet and the environment? No, not really, is it? Another advantage of LED: They are often already permanently installed in the luminaire, so you have the best light for years without having to think about how on earth you can get the light source out of the luminaire and replace it. So: there's actually nothing more to think about.

What shape do recessed floor lights have?

Round or angular - basically the simple and straightforward answer. But: in different variations. With a larger or smaller diameter, sometimes square or sometimes rectangular. But what does round or square mean here, you may be asking yourself. You have to take a closer look at a recessed floor light.

This is because in-ground luminaires are luminaires which, once installed, are inseparably linked to the architecture** of the garden, driveway or garden path. The lower part of the in-ground light - which is also usually round or square - is embedded in the ground, depending on the installation depth. The upper end of the outdoor light, which usually has a covering frame made of stainless steel, is flush with the ground except for a few millimetres. Danger of collision? Not an issue with recessed floor spotlights! In terms of design, the aforementioned stainless steel edging is - you may have guessed it - round or angular. Which of the two variants ultimately ends up in your garden is of course entirely up to your taste.

Can you set the scene in your garden and property with in-ground luminaires?

Regardless of whether your recessed floor light is round or square: the light itself recedes into the background, especially in the dark, while its light shines all the brighter. And that's exactly what it should do. Because it is their job. The only decisive factor is the purpose for which the recessed lamp is used - because this can be both practical, but also staging.

For example, the courtyard entrance or the steps to the door can be practically illuminated. You can actually stage anything on the property. Because every property has particularly beautiful corners, be it in the garden, right next to the house or perhaps even the garden paths. But when it gets dark, they simply disappear instead of being beautifully staged.

A recessed floor light, which often comes in a set with several of its kind, provides a light whose source recedes into the background. Only that which illuminates them is in focus and becomes visible in the darkness. The result is an exciting play of light and shadow. Popular locations for recessed floor spotlights are therefore boroughs, e.g. for façade lighting, the patio, garden paths or even the garden itself, to provide a cool backdrop for trees and shrubs.

Are in-ground luminaires for outdoor use suitable for traffic?

Stainless steel is the preferred material when it comes to producing a durable in-ground light for gardens and the like. And there is a reason for that. This is because luminaires of this type can easily be installed in core drill holes or floor cut-outs in top floors. And you can also roll over them with your vehicle with air-filled tires. Depending on the required installation situation, there are also in-ground luminaires that are installed using a recessed housing or simply "floating", e.g. in gravel, lawns, flower beds or paved areas. You can also drive over these with your vehicle with air-filled tires.

But whether this is a huge tractor or a small moped makes a decisive difference, because the maximum load and also the speed that can be driven over must be taken into account when selecting the light. Now you want to know whether you can drive your new red speedster over the new light? No problem. You can obtain information on this either directly from the product or from one of our competent specialist advisors using the contact form below.

Are outdoor in-ground lights waterproof?

Yes, recessed floor lights in gardens & co. don't have it easy. If they are not happy about the fact that they have been installed in a dry and covered area, they will get it from all sides in case of doubt. **Earth, dust, insects, sun, heat, snow and ice - and of course rain. This is why these luminaires should always have increased IP protection. IP65, 67 or even IP68, i.e. dust-tight and protected against water jets or temporary or permanent immersion, is therefore not uncommon for these lights, but actually rather standard. That's why, when buying ground recessed lights for outdoors, it's important to first check the location and weather influences in the intended area, then select the appropriate protection class for the light and only then can you really get started.

In addition to a sufficient IP protection rating, you should ensure that you use high-quality underground cables when installing your in-ground luminaires. Otherwise, water can still penetrate the luminaire after a short time. And then you have nothing from her. But you should also pay attention to effective drainage and a suitable gravel bed for drainage.

Yes, but with me it's like this and like that, you think to yourself. How do you know exactly what to do here? Don't panic! We can also help you with our specialist advice on the subject of in-ground luminaires and water - and of course much, much more. Simply write a short message and your questions will be transformed into answers and, last but not least, into an illuminated garden that will make your neighbors green with envy.

Are there also outdoor in-ground lights with solar technology?

Lights that are embedded in the ground are supposed to work with solar power? What may sound somewhat contradictory at first glance works perfectly and is particularly popular in the private sector. This is because only part of the luminaire is naturally set into the floor and is surrounded by it. The solar cells are located where the light source is and where the light comes out, and they absorb the sun's rays from there.

The key advantage of solar technology is that you don't have to dig up the whole garden and lay cables. And if there are no cables to the electricity grid, there is also no extra item on the electricity bill that has to be paid. A built-in twilight sensor controls the light as if by magic. The light duration depends on the rechargeable battery or the sun, which charges the solar cells. However, this is also the crux of the matter: if the battery is flat or simply not properly charged, for example because your dog has kicked dirt on it while playing in the garden, this naturally limits the lighting time. In the worst case scenario, the light may remain dark.

Our tip: _If it is absolutely essential for safety reasons that the luminaire emits its light - because otherwise you would simply overlook the wall at the garage entrance, for example - it is strongly recommended that you opt for luminaires with a fixed mains supply. This keeps your car, the wall and your nerves intact.

Are recessed floor lights with motion detectors also available?

...which is already permanently installed in the luminaire? No. Usually not. But don't worry, there is an alternative here too. In general, all recessed floor lights can also be easily switched via an external motion detector - on the house wall, for example. Clear advantage: The lights come on all by themselves when someone approaches the detection area.

Would you like a second alternative? Yes? How about a recessed floor light with a twilight sensor, for example? Not quite as flexibly adjustable as a motion detector, but no less practical for that. If the brightness in the garden & co. is below the set value, the light automatically switches on and when it gets light again, it naturally switches off again automatically. You can easily find out whether the light you have selected also has such a sensor in the item description.

Are recessed floor lights for outdoors also dimmable?

Yes, depending on the light, you can also dim your recessed floor light on the patio or in the yard. You can easily see whether the luminaire you already have in your sights can also be dimmed in the product details, where the line "Dimmable - Yes" must be present, then you can start dimming. Almost. Because what you definitely need in addition to your dimmable recessed floor light is the right external dimmer.

How? What? Suitable external dimmer? Which one goes with which luminaire, you may be asking yourself. Don't worry. These - and of course many other questions - can also be answered very easily: thanks to our customer service experts! Simply write a short message using the contact form below and you're ready to go.

Are there recessed floor lights for outdoor use with a shallow installation depth?

Yes, there are also such things. However, these lights are mostly used for decorative purposes. That means you can't walk on it and you certainly can't ride on it. So it's primarily about accent lighting, which makes the garden shed, the house facade, garden shrubs - or whatever you want to show - shine. The installation depth can be found in the product details.

However, if you want to go beyond purely decorative lighting, i.e. if you have completely different requirements for your recessed floor light, then the housing is usually larger and more stable accordingly. Your trusted electrical specialist is always a good choice.
