Where does the outdoor wall light belong? Right next to the entrance door. Because it takes more than 10 attempts to hit the keyhole. At the back by the patio door. And because it looks nicer, just one on the left and one on the right. On the front of the house to illuminate the garden path. After all, you don't need another stubbed toe because you missed a step. And of course also on the balcony, at the garden shed, at the back by the cellar stairs and, and, and. There are outdoor wall lights for all this and much more. For which location and in which style are you still looking for one?
In principle, you can of course use both in your outdoor wall lights. If it is equipped with a standardized socket, e.g. E27, both halogen and LED can be screwed in. But before you really decide between LED and halogen: pause for a moment, read the following lines and only then add the light sources to your shopping cart:
Yes, an outdoor wall light like this really doesn't have it easy. In winter, it is exposed to snow and ice, freezing cold and whatever else makes it really uncomfortable. But constant changes in the weather, extreme heat or rain without end can also be very hard on it. To protect the sensitive electronics and the light itself, every outdoor wall light has a protection class, called IP (Ingress Protection) - e.g. IP44 or IP65.
However, the exact type depends on where the luminaire is suspended. And above all: to which weather influences it is directly or indirectly exposed. For this reason, it is unfortunately not possible to give a generally valid answer regarding the necessary protection class and must be decided on a case-by-case basis.
The first digit indicates protection against foreign bodies. The second digit, on the other hand, provides information about protection against moisture. You can easily find out which number stands for what in the following table:
Digit IP4 X 4 | Protection against foreign bodies |
---|---|
0 | No protection |
1 | Protected against solid foreign bodies ≥ 50 mm |
2 | Protected against solid foreign bodies ≥ 12.5 mm |
3 | Protected against solid foreign bodies ≥ 2.5 mm |
4 | Protected against solid foreign bodies ≥ 1 mm |
5 | Dust-protected |
6 | Dustproof |
Digit IP4 X | Protection against moisture |
---|---|
0 | No protection |
1 | Protected against vertically impinging dripping water |
2 | Protected against dripping water at an angle |
3 | Protected against water spray |
4 | Protected against splash water |
5 | Protected against water jets |
6 | Protected against strong water jets |
7 | Protected against temporary submersion |
8 | Protected against permanent submersion |
You can find more information on the types of protection in our IP protection types guide.
Like many other outdoor lights, outdoor wall lights are now also equipped with integrated motion detectors. And that definitely makes sense. Why? Well, because that....
Our tip: It's better to steer clear of energy-saving lamps with motion detectors. They have a start-up time. And waiting for the light to come on with motion detectors is really quite annoying and sometimes really dangerous. It is better to use LED lamps here. Like halogen and incandescent lamps, they immediately provide 100 % brightness!
You think: Solar \= luminous jam jar for the garden table and colorful decorative ball for the flower bed? Maybe a solar spotlight to light up the pretty flowers? So, are they actually only to be used purely decoratively? Far from it! Today, solar technology is a long way from its beginnings. And they are no longer just used for decorative purposes, but also in practical lighting - as in outdoor wall lights. And here too, solar technology simply offers numerous, convincing advantages:
Our tip: It is best to always expose the solar module to direct sunlight. And ideally align it to the south. Is not possible at all? Then consider going for a solar outdoor wall light where the solar module is not permanently integrated into the light. This allows you to position the light where you need it. And the solar panel just around the corner, where more sunshine can reach it.
Upwards** and downwards**. Only downwards or only upwards. Or, if you prefer, in all directions. Are you wondering what that means? Quite simply. You alone decide how you want the outdoor wall light to illuminate your garden or house entrance. And with outdoor wall lights in particular, there are a wide variety of options. One of these is the upward and downward light emission.
And with a luminaire like this, you can kill 2 birds with one stone. Security and Staging. And that with just one single light. For example, on the house wall directly above a garden path, such a luminaire not only provides safety - namely through good lighting conditions on the path. Beautiful light highlights are also created, as the light travels along the house wall to great effect.
Our tip: Install several of these outdoor wall lights at some distance from each other. How amazed do you think your neighbors will be _?
An outdoor wall light with motion detector is a really nice thing. Relieves the purse and also the environment. And also increases the security of your own four walls. Really great then. But can you go one step further in terms of comfort and safety with light? Yes, you can. With outdoor wall lights with camera. In addition to the best lighting properties and an integrated motion sensor, these offer numerous other advantages:
