One thing is certain: without them, the dark season would be a whole lot more unpleasant! We are talking about outdoor lights with motion detectors. They switch the light on automatically when we rush down the steps at the house entrance in the dark in the morning or drive into the yard in the evening.
The best light source for any outdoor lighting with motion detector: the LED. Either permanently installed or as a retrofit lamp (for conventional lights with socket). The reason is not just the energy efficiency or the long durability. But in the case of lamps with motion detectors, the main advantage is that LEDs instantly reach 100 % brightness. You need this when walking up steps as well as for burglary protection.
Everything you may need on your property! This includes:
And we are not yet talking about all the lights that you can retrofit with an external motion detector. We are only talking about outdoor lights that have a fixed motion detector. You then only need to set this according to the requirements of your property, whereby you can change the detection area, i.e. angle and range, as well as the light duration.
If you are faced with the situation of deciding on a completely new outdoor light, we recommend an outdoor light with integrated motion detector. Here, the motion sensor is permanently integrated into the frame, is immediately functional and only needs to be set correctly. Installation is completely uncomplicated thanks to the enclosed installation instructions. These are best given to an electrician who will install the light properly.
If, on the other hand, you want to retrofit an existing light with a motion detector**, first and foremost ensure that you comply with all safety rules when working on electronic systems. Or call your trusted electrician right away. What you can do beforehand is to consider whether the light source should only be controllable via the motion detector or also via a switch. In order not to be restricted here, you can have a selector switch installed. With this, you can conveniently choose between motion detector mode or permanent on or off.
In contrast, you have no installation problems with outdoor lights with motion detectors that are operated via Solar. At least you don't need to wire the lights, as the energy required to light them up is absorbed by the solar panel during the day. In the case of outdoor wall lights with solar, for example, you will of course still need to fix them to the wall. The most uncomplicated are probably ground spike lights with solar, which you can reposition again and again.

An outdoor lamp with motion detector is always used where you do not need permanent light, e.g. on the steps at the entrance to the house, at the entrance to the courtyard or garage or in passageways. This makes it necessary for you to set the motion detector precisely (if the product allows this). Otherwise the light won't switch on when you park your car or try to climb the stairs to the front door with full shopping bags. But that's exactly what matters!
So make it clear beforehand where you want to use the luminaire and select products with appropriate properties. Important properties are detection angle, detection range and light duration, which differ from luminaire to luminaire and are not always adjustable. You should therefore pay full attention to the product description.
By the way: To ensure that the motion detector does not also ensure that the light is switched on during the day, there is the twilight sensor, which is often installed with the outdoor light with motion detector (for more detailed information, please refer to the product details). This sensor measures the ambient brightness. The motion detector is activated or deactivated from a certain brightness level. Some products also have an adjustable twilight sensor - after all, people often have very different perceptions of whether something is just light enough or already dark.
A very common application for outdoor lights with motion detectors: the house entrance. A 90° angle of coverage is often sufficient for outdoor wall lights. For a whole house wall, 180° is recommended. The illumination of paths with path lights works well with a detection angle of 120°. Have you already chosen a specific product with a larger angle of coverage? Then take this and adjust it manually later using Fades.
When setting the detection range, there is no way around trial and error: ask a second person to test your newly set motion detector by diligently walking up and down. In the meantime, take care of the fine adjustment. Then the outdoor lamp with motion detector is the perfect fit for your property!
You can adjust the light duration to your needs. Only experience can help here, as parking in the garage, for example, can take very different lengths of time and sometimes more or fewer steps to the house entrance need to be illuminated.
In the vast majority of cases, so-called passive infrared sensors (PIR sensors) are installed in outdoor lights. These record a thermal image, check it constantly and react to changes by switching on the light. This technology is used for both outdoor and indoor luminaires.
High-frequency or radar sensors** are also used indoors. These work via electromagnetic waves. They are gradually becoming established as intelligent HF sensors (iHF) for outdoor use.
Only indoors, on the other hand, are ultrasonic sensors used, which work via sound reflection.
Another sensor is the camera sensor, which electronically evaluates image content and is used both indoors and outdoors. However, please do not confuse this sensor with camera lights - one of the most innovative outdoor lights ever. With the latter, you can access your light's camera from anywhere in the world, which shows you the entrance to your home, for example (and informs you by push message when the letter carrier is at the door). Such high-quality lights, which are often also equipped with a microphone and other technical refinements, can be found from brand manufacturers such as STEINEL.
The right protection rating is one of the most important things you need to consider for your new outdoor light with (and without) motion detector. Outdoor luminaires are exposed to a wide range of weather conditions. But not every part of your property is swept by the storm and pelted by rain. This is why outdoor lights do not always require the same protection class. The IP protection class ensures that the luminaire is adequately protected against the ingress of moisture and foreign bodies.
Please tell our_ specialist advisor which part of your property you would like to equip with an outdoor light with motion detector. We can then tell you the required protection class directly. You will find the contact details below
By the way: Many people automatically think of stainless steel outdoor lighting when they think of robustness in outdoor areas. However, many outdoor lights with and without motion detectors are now made of high-quality plastic, which is also suitable for outdoor weather conditions.
If you do decide to use stainless steel, you will of course benefit from all the advantages of this material:
