The AJ luminaire seriesThe AJ luminaire made its designer Arne Jacobsen world-famous. The functional cult lamp with its refined geometric design was created exclusively for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen in 1957. From there it spread all over the world. Today, the luminaire is part of the core range of the Danish premium manufacturer Louis Poulsen in various versions ranging from the original stainless steel look to vibrant colors.
History of the AJ luminaire

Arne Jacobsen not only designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (Radisson Blu) between 1957 and 1960, but also its furnishings and lighting. The AJ luminaire series (named after the designer's initials) welcomed hotel guests in 1960 in elegant stainless steel and copper versions as table, wall and floor lamps.
The straight lines, the oblique and right angles, the targeted beam of light and the high-quality workmanship were a masterful combination of functionalism and minimalism. The lamp became the foundation of Arne Jacobsen's world fame.

Designer
Arne JacobsenArne Jacobsen (1902 - 1971) graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1927 and opened his own architectural practice two years later. His best-known projects include the National Bank in Copenhagen, St. Catherine's College in Oxford and the Christianeum grammar school in Hamburg-Othmarschen.
In this context, he designed chairs such as "The Egg", "The Swan", "Grand Prix" and "Series 7" - and the legendary AJ luminaire series for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Today, Arne Jacobsen is world-famous for his graceful and timeless designs. He has been awarded numerous design prizes and honorary doctorates.
