Spectacular Poppy designer table lamp with independently opening petals

The light is turned on. Slowly but surely the Poppy table lamp springs into life. You can watch as the fine metal petals on the lamp head slowly open and reveal the light within. This wonderful spectacle lasts around two minutes, and then the flower has opened. Magic? Not at all! Simple physics lies behind the opening and closing of the flower. Poppy has been inspired by regular plants, which open their flowers and turn towards the sun when it shines. In order to mimic the effect of a flower that opens and closes independently, the lighting designers Georg Soanca-Pollak, Peter Thammer and Ulrich Beckert used bimetal – a material that reacts to heat. As soon as the bimetal petals are warmed by the heat emitted by the light bulb within the hand-blown glass body, they begin to slowly unfurl to create a spectacular show! When Poppy is switched off and the metal is no longer subjected to heat, the petals close themselves.

You can probably already guess where this table lamp is best placed. A classic, stylish room, a cosy seating area and a small side table – Poppy is the perfect addition. The table lamp must not be hidden from view. It must be freely visible so that everyone who enters the room can see its beauty and so its can fully make use of its radius of movement. This is quite considerable thanks to the flexible arm. Black fabric envelops the metal arm, which can be rotated and curved in any direction. Poppy’s light can thus reach every corner of the room and can shine directly or indirectly – this is a real all-rounder!
