Foscarini Magneto – futuristic LED table lamp with magnetic adjustable head
The Magneto LED table lamp from Foscarini exerts a strong attraction in the truest sense of the word. From a technical point of view, it is extremely streamlined and purist. A spherical supermagnet made of rare earths that connects the base to the head serves as both the central element of this table lamp as well as the technical gimmick. Rare earths, also called rare earth elements, include the 17 chemical elements from Group 3 of the periodic table and the lanthanides.
The magnetic sphere serves as a joint, which enables the head, made of fully-dyed ABS, to be moved to different positions and heights at any time. One side of the base bar, made of steel coated with epoxy resin, is fitted with grooves, in which the magnet ball is integrated perfectly. This means the head which the LED light source is housed in can be turned upwards, downwards, left and right, meaning therefore that the direction of the precise light beam can always be adjusted to the situation. Magneto not only allows a table surface to be directly lit up for reading or working, but also indirect, partial light when the light head is turned towards the ceiling. In terms of its function, this means the table lamp is almost like a torch, whose light beam can also be adjusted very precisely. Magneto is switched on and off via a switch located on the black cable. This is partly visible inside the shaft and, apart from the magnet, is the only element connecting the shaft and the head.
The Italian industrial designer and art director Giulio Iacchetti designed Magneto for the prestigious Foscarini brand in 2011. Among other things, Iacchetti has become famous for searching for and defining new types of objects.
