It was inaugurated in 1963 and designed by Arne Jacobsen in a modernist architectural style that contrasts with the classical architecture of the surrounding Oxford University. Originally, the AJ Oxford Table Lamp was designed as a permanently installed luminaire for the impressive dining hall of the college. Today, the lamp can still be found in St. Catherine's College, which continues to be used for teaching and as student accommodation.
