He sees himself as an advocate of democratic design, emphasising simplicity and functionality. He prefers to emphasise the beauty and integrity of materials before adding unnecessary ornamentation or elaborate details that would distract from the essentials. Northern's idea and guiding principle is that they combine pale beauty with raw contrasts and traditional craftsmanship. They place great emphasis on natural materials and craftsmanship. Combining beauty with the functional is not always easy. Northern's aim is to create works of art that fit uncompromisingly into both contemporary and traditional spaces.
