GUBI is a family-owned lighting company based in Copenhagen, specialising in timeless, luxury lighting and furniture. Little wonder then that they’re one of the biggest names on the global design scene.
Founded in 1967, the company remains firmly in family hands today, with Managing Director Jacob Gubi Olsen being the son of the two founders, Lisbeth and Gubi Olsen. With creative vision and bold intuition, GUBI brings together the work of respected designers and emerging new talent.
GUBI brings together icons of the past with the classics of tomorrow. The result is a collection spanning 100 years of history, all with this Danish design house’s quality artistry.
Designers Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup have worked together for most of their career. After graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, they worked for the Finnish Arktikum Museum and the harbour area in Elsinore, among others.
In 1968, they were winners of the Danish Industrial Design Competition for their Semi Pendant lamp. A striking, arched, enamelled metal shade that creates a cone-shaped light. An exquisite lamp that is still a firm favourite in dining areas and luxury kitchens today.
After graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, architect and designer Louis Weisdorf worked in graphic, interior and industrial design, recreational areas, amusement parks and construction areas. In other words, he’s the epitome of an all-round architect.
He created the first sculptural of his famous Multi-Lite lamp series in 1972, representing a timeless interior element from the golden era of Danish design. The characteristic shape with the rotatable shades allows for individual rotation, giving the user the option to change the direction of light to suit their surroundings. A design that reflects Louis Weisdorf’s passion for individuality and diversity.
A pioneer of Danish design, Greta Magnusson Grossman, opened her own studio after studying at the Stockholm Art Institution Konstfack. Her work was diverse and included elements of industrial design, interior design and architecture.
With the filigree lamp series Gräshoppa, created in 1947 and characterised by its backward tilted stand, Greta, who passed away in 1999, created a monument for eternity. A true design classic.
